The Capella Augustina was founded by the early music specialist Andreas Spering. Under his baton, these internationally acclaimed musicians specialized in performance practice gather to rehearse and perform repertoire ranging from the Baroque Age to the 19th century, using period instruments and applying the specific musical styles that these works demand. The ensemble is led by its concertmaster, Armenian-French violinist Chouchane Siranossian.

The ensemble’s consistently high standards have attracted growing attention beyond the borders of the Rhine region. They have thus been invited to perform Haydn’s marionette opera Die Feuersbrunst and his opera L’infedeltà delusa at the Potsdam Music Festival, and the Lower Saxony Music Festival has featured the Capella Augustina in a production of Haydn’s oratorio Il Trionfo del Tempo. In addition, the Capella has been invited to perform at the two palaces in Hungary and in Austria that previously belonged to the House of Esterházy, Haydn’s employer for many years.

The orchestra also presented a staged production of Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg. It inaugurated a new concert hall for the Bavarian Forest Cultural Festival (Kulturwald) with Haydn’s Creation, and was invited to perform in the Kingdom of Bahrain in a production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro staged by Aix-en-Provence Festival. In

2017 and 2018, the Capella Augustina will be giving guest performances at a number of events including the Bad Arolsen Baroque Festival, the Potsdam Music Festival, the Mozart Festival in Würzburg, the Handel Festival in Halle, and the European Festival Weeks in Passau.

The Capella Augustina has been the resident orchestra of the Brühl Palace Concerts since 1996, when it attracted international attention by founding the very first Haydn Festival in the Federal Republic of Germany. Joseph Haydn’s output thus forms the centrepiece of the orchestra’s musical activities: in recent years, it has featured the Haydn operas Armida and La vera costanza, as well as the oratorio Die sieben letzten Worte in its programmes.
In 2016, the orchestra performed the complete Paris Symphonies of Joseph Haydn in Brühl. In 2017 it has presented concert versions of L’anima del filosofo, Haydn’s last opera.

The ensemble has released several award-winning CDs, including the Handel opera Imeneo, the Haydn oratorios The Creation and Il Ritorno di Tobia, und the Brahms serenades for orchestra.
