Born in Munich, bass-baritone Matthias Winckhler studied voice with Andreas Macco and Wolfgang Holzmair at Salzburg Mozarteum University, and received further musical guidance from major artists including Rudolf Piernay, Matthias Goerne, and Markus Hinterhäuser.


He has won prizes at the 2014 International Mozart Competition in Salzburg and at the Leipzig International Bach Competition in 2012, as well as a number of further awards.


From 2015 to 2018, he was a member of the regular soloist ensemble of Hannover State Opera, where he covered roles such as Almaviva (Nozze), Papageno (Magic Flute), and Albert (Werther).


Matthias Winckhler collaborates on a regular basis with conductors including Hans Graf, Pablo Heras-Casado, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Jordi Savall, und Masaaki Suzuki, and with orchestras and ensembles such as the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Salzburg Camerata, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, the Bach Collegium Japan, and the Vienna Philharmonic. Concert appearances have led him to perform at events such as the Salzburg Festival, the Bad Kissingen Summer Festival, the Thuringian Bach Weeks, the Leipzig Bachfest, and the Salzburg Mozart Week.


He also gives vocal recitals with pianists Marcelo Amaral, Bernadette Bartos, and Jan Philip Schulze.


In the field of contemporary music, he works together with composers such as Nikolaus Brass, Friedrich Cerha, Manfred Trojahn, and Gerhard Wimberger, including a number of world première performances.
